Special Presentation

A presentation was given by Katie Brewer of the Dept of Agriculture’s Mosquito Control Section.  In a PowerPoint presentation, she presented information on mosquitoes in our area and potential health problems such as West Nile Virus in humans, birds, and animals, and heartworm in dogs.  The presentation focused primarily on mosquito bite prevention, including information on spraying and placing materials in water to prevent the maturation of larvae (only mature female mosquitoes bite.)  People interested in receiving free yard assessments should contact Katie Brewer at 410-841-5870.  Basic home mosquito controls include flushing birdbaths and containers under potted plants at least once a week, cleaning roof gutters and downspouts, turning over wading pools, wheelbarrows, and any other object that holds water (including items stored under decks and porches) and draining water away from tarps and grill covers.  More information may be found on their website: www.mda.state.me.us/plants-pests/mosquito-control  Indian Hills-Glen Eden’s Board will be identifying marshy areas for the Dept. of Agriculture to monitor, such as the wet area behind the pool.  Some residents have asked for assistance in dealing with “no-seeums” (biting midges that breed in moist areas under dry leaves).  The Department of Agriculture will also assess those areas and make recommendations for control.

Review of minutes of last meeting and approval – the minutes from the August meeting were approved as submitted.

Standing Committee Reports

Old business

A written sign committee report was presented on behalf of Tracy Kruk (chair) who could not attend the meeting.  In her report, Tracy updated the board on the sign committee’s progress.  They have bids from 6 different sign committees and have identified two options that look most feasible and appealing.  The plan is to place signage for Indian Hills and Glen Eden on both of the Rt. 2 entrance walls.  One option would require two years to phase in the changes needed because of budget constraints, and the other could be done this year.  Also under consideration are the sealing of the walls on Rt. 2, replacing the missing Glen Eden sign, moving the pole that blocks the view of the wall (and the road) at Rt. 2 on the northbound side, and adding electricity to the walls so that the signs can be illuminated at night.  All of these items may not fit in the budget, but a thorough assessment is being done to determine costs and practicality. The sign committee hopes to come to the Board with recommendations at the October meeting.

Diane Nicholson reported on the zoning appeal status – The petitioner has requested an extension of one year to again request piecemeal rezoning on his Rt. 2 property, which most will remember as the old Karlton’s Floral Gardens.  They were granted that extension.  Meanwhile, they will be seeking rezoning in the Anne Arundel comprehensive rezoning plan, scheduled to begin in November 2009.  At its August meeting, the Board voted unanimously to testify against the rezoning of the R1 property to C1.  The Board will keep track of the case and will notify the community if action is recommended.

The by laws review committee has not yet met but is in the process of scheduling a meeting to review the by laws of the community and recommend any needed changes.  The changes will be subject to a full community vote.  If anyone wishes to make suggestions for changes, please contact Kurt Riegel. The next meeting will be held at the Indian Hills – Glen Eden clubhouse on Wednesday October 21st at 7:00 PM.  All members of the community are welcome to attend.
