Community POOL Opening

You have undoubtedly seen signs of activity around the pool. They are busy preparing the pool and water for this coming season.  Opening day is Saturday, May 27th. Thanks to the pool committee for their consistent work to keep our pool viable and fun. For pool hours and rules please refer to the neighborhood web page.  ihge.org Select facilities and then pool at the top.  There will be an annual party to celebrate the pool opening and Memorial Day the evening of the 26th. Details on the party to follow.

Community Board Ballots

Community elections are coming.  We plan to have ballots out by the end of May for a June election.  Before we can pull together the ballots we need people to run for several positions.  Neighborhood by-laws limit the president to two consecutive terms. That means someone else needs to be president starting in July 2006.  We always need extra members-at-large who attend board meetings and help with various projects.  Anyone can run for any position, of course, so please contact one of your current board members if you are interested in being an active member of the community.   Positions: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, & 5 members-at-large. We currently have someone running for vice president, treasurer, possibly secretary & 3 member-at-large positions.

President: For the 2 years I have held this position I have found it is far less demanding than I originally thought. Community meetings are twice a year. Board meetings are every month to every two months depending upon the need. I spend maybe 5-10 hrs a month as the president. There are months that are busier than others. Last year the job was less demanding – maybe 5 hrs a month max.  I hold down a full-time job with a 45 minute drive each way and travel quite often (every other month) throughout the year for work and pleasure.  Even with this schedule I have been able to keep up with the demands of the president’s position and maintain my own life at home and play. The hardest part of the job was learning what needed to be done and when. This year I promise to stay around and help the next president as needed to learn this.

SPEED

Spring is here. The kids and all the adults are out more walking and playing on our neighborhood roads.  Please watch your speed as you drive through to protect us all. Tracy Kruk has gathered information on how to get speed bumps evaluated and possibly built in the neighborhood.  We need a committee of six to work on this issue.  Call Tracy Kruk if you would like to work in this group.  It should only require a meeting or two. If no one volunteers we will assume this is not an issue to be pursued.  410-757-8647

Special Thanks

In addition to those mentioned in specific sections, the board would like to thank a few others for volunteering their time to help out around the community.  Jason and Jacob Segre helped plant flowers in the Fall.   Steve Riley & John Dever helped us determine what was wrong with the lights around the clubhouse and to get them all repaired. If we have forgotten to include anyone please know that we are grateful for your input.

Useful County Numbers for Neighborhood Issues

Street lights out:  First look at the streetlight and record the number on a sticker on the pole. It is easier to address the issue quickly if they have this. Anne Arundel County contracts with Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) to maintain street lights. To request service on an existing street light, please contact BGE directly at 1-800-685-0123 and follow the prompts.

County land overgrown: If you see a problem with overgrown bushes, trees or grass on county land (for instance the stretch of green past the clubhouse heading up Bald Eagle) you can report this for clean up to the Central District for Public Works. 410-222-7940.

Neighborhood Entrance Wall Repair

You may not all have noticed, but the neighborhood entrance wall on the North side was involved in an accident on Rt. 2 in November.  We have spoken with our insurance company and several contractors in regards to repairing this wall before it crumbles down. All has gone smoothly with this. We hope to have this work underway within the next month so don’t be surprised if you see some trucks and contractors at the entrance off Rt. 2.

Indian Hills Covenants

Volunteers are needed.  Several community members have stated an interest in adopting covenants in the Indian Hills community.  Glen Eden already has a set of covenants.  A committee needs to form to look into this. First, they will need to find out the laws on adopting covenants after a community has already formed and homes were purchased without covenant attachments. Second, they will need to draft a proposed list of covenants. Third, they will need to present this for a neighborhood vote. If you are interested, please contact a board member and we will arrange the first group meeting.

Neighborhood Ambassador Needed

Stan Johnson has volunteered to be our neighborhood representative at the Severn River Association meetings. This group works issues concerning maintaining the beauty of the Severn River and neighborhood beautification such as the plantings along Rt. 2. We still need someone to represent Indian Hills and Glen Eden in the Broadneck Federation.  This group addresses development issues in the great Broadneck region with an aim towards maintaining our residential atmosphere.  For details please call Sophia Phillips  410-757-5906.

Yard Sale

The community yard sale was such a success last year, the activities committee is planning to do it again this year.  Information on the dumpsters are on the next page.

When: 1 April   9:30-11:30

For details contact Jennie Kantowski: 410-757-6094

Dumpsters

Anne Arundel County brings a few dumpsters to Indian Hills every year.  This year the dumpsters will show up at 8am on the April 6th and leave at the same time on April 8th. They will be in the clubhouse parking lot. The county has some restrictions they ask us to follow. They have the right to not leave dumpsters in our neighborhood again if we don’t abide by these rules.  The guidelines are easy.  First, don’t leave items around the dumpsters – place everything inside the dumpsters. Second, don’t overload the dumpster – nothing over the top of it. Third, respect this list of unacceptable material:

1. Junk Automobiles    7. Hazardous Wastes

2. Trailers     8. Boats

3. Gas and Propane Tanks   9. Tires

4. Tree Trunks     10. Logs

5. Oil Drums or Tanks    11. Paint

6. Liquids     12. Refrigerators or Air Conditioners

Neighborhood Maintenance

Most of us feel lucky to live in Indian Hills/Glen Eden.  It is a sought after place to live for many reasons, one of which is the standard of the community.  Board members have received several requests from community members which we would like to pass on:

Pet Waste: We all love walking the neighborhood with our dog but we need to be vigilant about cleaning up our dog’s waste from other people’s yards and community grounds. No one wants to have to police their yard for your dogs manure nor have to walk community grounds keeping an eye out for doggie bombs.

Trash:  This is not necessarily caused by our residents (we cannot control the winds) but it would be great if those out on the streets made an effort to pick up trash they see and get it into a trash can.  Just carry a plastic bag with you while out in the neighborhood.

Playground:  We have some damage on the playground equipment and tables due to older children that has cost the community. For example, we have had to purchase a new baby swing for $200 due to older children standing and sitting on it. They were spotted. Please make sure your kids know how to respect the community grounds. Any damage comes out of the community fees charged to each of us. Examples of issues: Stick to playground equipment for your size and weight. Don’t use the benches and parking lot barriers as your skateboard props. Don’t nock over the trash cans or break them.

Yard Waste Removal: Please STOP hauling your yard waste into the community property behind the tennis court and pool and along the stream. Everything left here or any other community property will eventually have to be hauled away by the community at an expense. This means higher community fees or less we can do to maintain the place. Also, please don’t just blow all your yard waste (grass and leaves) into the road or at the edge of your neighbor’s property. They don’t appreciate it.

Community Center Water Issues

Based on budget votes for the last two years, we have chosen to move forward to resolve the standing water issues around the clubhouse, tennis courts and playground.  Our fiscal years are July through June so we only have part of the money at this time. The board members decided we would like to move forward on this work so we planned to have the contractor perform some of the work this year and the remainder in the next fiscal year (after July). The board members chose a contractor to do the work based on a verbal price with the requirement that we first receive a written estimate. The written estimate was $1800 more due to the increase in PVC piping and fuel costs. We are now talking to a couple of other contractors but we have decided to move forward with the initial contractor (Dunkin Septic Services) at the new price unless we receive new bids within the next couple of weeks. Basically this task is taking longer than any of us had hoped and the delay cost us some money.  We are still within our budget so we will proceed as soon as we have a signed contract. Details will be provided once we have a start date. We all owe a special thanks to Kathy Wicker and Bridget Cain for all their work to get us to this point and the continuing work Bridget provides reviewing drawings, talking to contractors and helping the board understand the construction details.
